A person's vision is probably one of the most important things that they have. Without it, life in the modern world becomes a very difficult proposition as many a visually impaired person can attest. The science behind seeing has improved a lot over the centuries, from the simple glasses made by the Chinese to the sophisticated contact lenses that are available today. While most people are not too bothered with regards to wearing glasses or contact lenses; there are some people who do not appreciate this option. Whether it is for cosmetic reasons or more practical ones, they often seek out another alternative - LASIK vision correction.
LASIK vision correction is a type of refractive laser eye surgery that has been used to correct conditions such as myopia (or near-sightedness), hyperopia (or far-sightedness) and astigmatism (blurring caused by an abnormally shaped eye). LASIK is an acronym that stands for Laser Assisted in Situ-Keratomileusis. Keratomileusis is a surgical procedure that is performed to improve the refractive qualities of the cornea of the eye. The invention and refinement of laser technology has made the procedure much easier, quicker and safer but it still remains a very complex procedure nonetheless.
The LASIK vision correction method is preferred over the photoreactive keratectomy, since it much easier on the patient. The patient does not have such a long recovery time and there is generally has less pain involved. In some cases, however, photoreactive keratectomy is still recommended in people whose eyes are not suited to the LASIK. While LASIK has been tested and used successfully many times, like with all surgical procedures, there can be various side effects or complications that might occur. While the instance of these complications is generally low (2-3%) they are still of concern and you should ask your Ophthalmologist about them, before deciding on the LASTIK surgery.
Research has indicated that LASIK vision correction is a safe and effective method of corrective eye surgery. It has also brought to light an assortment of other facts as well. While it is effective, there are concerns over the long-term side effects of the procedure, though little to no research has been done on this area as of yet. There is also indications that while the procedure can be effective for mild myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism; it does not seem to be able to handle treat very serious cases of the above mentioned. In general, however, the success rate of LASIK is high. The purported cases of the surgery failing is more due to the too high expectations that people place on the procedure, rather than inefficiency of the corrective technique.
LASIK vision correction certainly has its merits and has helped countless people to see without the aid of glasses or contact lenses. Just remember that as we grow older our eyes tend to weaken naturally, and there is nothing you can really do about that. Whether you decide on LASIK to cure your visual problems or more traditional means just remember to take good care of your eyes on a day-to-day basis. LASIK can fix your vision but it cannot replace it.
